Movable Python: The Portable Python Distribution

The Movable Python Mega-Pack

More Python than you Can Handle

Python on a Stick

Introduction

The Movable Python Mega-Pack

Movable Python allows you to configure any number of interpreters, to be used from the GUI launcher program. You can launch programs with these interpreters, or launch interactive interpreter sessions.

This means that from a single interface, you can test programs with several versions of Python (or in fact any other executable).

The Mega-Pack comes with all four Movable Python interpreters, plus IronPython :

  • IronPython 1.0 Production
  • Python 2.5
  • Python 2.4.4
  • Python 2.3.5
  • Python 2.2.3

It also has a couple of bonus extras. Smile

As you can see from the image above, it comes preconfigured for all these interpreters. That means you can choose which version of Python a program is run with from the menu.

As well as being preconfigured, purchasing the Mega-Pack is a lot cheaper than buying all the distributions separately. It costs £12.99, about the cost of two and a half distributions.

To learn more about configuring Movable Python to work with different interpreters, including installed versions of Python, read Configuring Movable Python Interpreters from the reference manual.

Bonus Extras

As well as the four distributions of Movable Python, the Mega-Pack comes with a couple of free extras.

Nanagram

Nanagram the anagram creator

Nanagram the Anagram Creator is a program for creating anagrams. Creating silly anagrams of people's names is probably the most practical application of Nanagram [1]. Wink

The full version of Nanagram is normally sold, but the Windows installer comes free with Movable Python.

Movable Python .NET

Movable Python .NET

Movable Python .NET is an experimental program available only to purchasers of the Mega-Pack. It is a version of the Movable Python GUI launcher, written in C#. It lacks many of the features of the 'standard' Movable Python, but has a nicer GUI and a few extra features.

These include :

  • Auto detecting any installed Python
  • Assigning system wide hot keys to scripts
  • Drag and drop

This version will probably provide the basis of a GUI update for the next version of Movable Python.

[1]There is also an older CGI version which is fun to play with.
