Well..................

Only technical jargon here I`m afraid.... maybe I ought to do something more *real* like share my heart - my feelings and stuff.... heck I might be a bloke but I still have feelings. My girlfriend Delia (who is Romanian and extremely cute) swore to kill me if I mentioned her here - but heck, shes unlikely to actually check... so maybe I ought to..... hmmm... anyway - back to the technical junk....

Brinkster who are hosting my free site have a 16 meg a day transfer limit..... at the moment the whole site is about nine or ten megabytes - so when google spider the whole thing to put it in their database..... thats most of my limit used up. Seeing as I thought I`d be clever and sign up with addme.com who submit your site to 14 search engines free - I was in danger of finding that the only people who could ever view my site would be tehe search engines..........

So... eventually I found a new host - actually a firend with a very good setup and system (in fact I came up with his name...) blue-iridium.....

Yeeha - hurrah - whoopeee - except no web interface to put the site together... boo.... (the brinkster one is very good...). A friend uploaded it all for me - after much shenanigans trying to edit the file - hurrah for Ultraedit with its global search and replace trhough a whole directory !!

I then found this nifty WebFTP service - so I`ve checked its all there ok.... but *damn* its not setup properly the server end and I can`t view it *sulk* - so my site is down for a bit.....

To make things worse brinkster have got some problem on their servers and in removing some dead links from an essential file thats included in *every* page - it got deleted...... and can`t be uploaded......... *double sulk* - so I currently have no website at all - jus tthis blog page.......... oh well such is life....

It looks like analog is coming back into fashion - hurrah. Look at this Why analog is cool again......

This is an interesting subject (hey I think its interesting alright...) the universe is analog right ? So analog has to be a better way of representing data - digital is only ever an approximation to the real.......

Unfortuantely the consequence of modern quantuum theory is that the universe might in actual fact be digital (heck they even reckon time is quantized - the smallest possible unit of time being 10-43 seconds...... so digital is better ?

Not necessarily - an analog wave still carries more information and one of the things Wolfraam said in his weird new theory is that one consequence of the way the univertse works is that in order to exactly represent a system (e.g. a weather system or anyother chaotic pattern) you need something as big as the system itself..... so analog is still better - see what I mean ? No... oh well.... it all boils down to digital is an approximation - if the real world is digital because of quantuum effects then analog is just better digital ! lol - I`m going round in circles but I know what I mean..........

Anyway - mainly a welcome to alx_cyberpunk - french sysadmin, gamesdeveloper, cyberpunk prophet and more....

Checkout his website Nearphuture

Now it would be really nice if we could get a live cyberpunk forum going...... as alx says - the nearphuture is here... cyberpunk is no longer science fiction......

Found an interesting Kurt Vonnegut Site... he`s an awesome sci-fi author wih a very weird perspective so its well worth checking out his stuff......

Wired have an interesting take on why google bought blogger......

Cleveland said Google's acquisition of Pyra would, quite simply, help Google create a more accurate search engine by adding rich new sources of data gleaned from weblogs.

The secret, Cleveland said, is in the scores of links webloggers create every day to content on the Web.

Not from this blog - I only use Wired news and CNET.......

Test post to get rid of the silly wired bit at the bottom - which would be great if I hadn`t made it so big and the headlines ever changed..... *sigh*......

Hopefully now - all the extra articles are added as well... hurrah.... need to spend less time on this website and more time on genuinely creative things... hee hee... oh well...

Hello, good morning and welcome to another week.... yuk !!

Ho hum.... Atlantis is cool, everything plodding along nicely - the 'boys' in the alliance are still a bit quiet but things are going well. i`ve formed my basic units, I`m still living of money earned from articles in the times though (!!) ... I *start* to tax this go, a bit ahead of the others in the area but the mad scramble for land starts happening soon... hopefully this is when the alliance starts to come into play and we can share the land in a dignified manner......... updated my beginners guide - have to update the one here !! The message board is off to a slow start but will gradually get there I think.

Thinking of selling *both* my PDAs and buying another one !! Anyone want to buy a Visor prism or a Jornada 525 ?? LOL - I`ll be putting adverts in ebay soon - I`m an ebay virgin so this should be fun.

Finally got *all* the old content across from the old Voidspace site that I wanted to keep - hurrah. Now I`m ready to start adding the new and better content and then tweak it so that it all looks nice - maybe make it a bit less grey........ Having done that I got 'freefind' the funky search engine to 'spider' the site (sounds scary doesn`t it) so that it can build up an index for searching against and *used* all my allowance - the brinkster site only allows me 16mb transfer a day !!! I`m going to actually pay for a site - bugger... Easily offer hosting on a virtual server (!?!?!?) for thirty quid that includes 5 gig transfer. That actually works out at only about 16mb a day - *sigh* - but at least the site will stay up and they just charge me for extra bandwidth......

I`m wafflign aren`t I sorry - my box is nearly ready - looking for server software so I will have my own box permanently online. Using No-ip we can then host stuff from that box.... but it will be too unreliable for me to host voidspace... oh well - will be funky anyway.....

Sorry to bore you - interesting looking CNET article on nanotech... enjoy - see you again soon....

Hmmm... maybe oneday I could talk about real issues here instead of just omputer waffle - theres an idea.....

Well its Saturday morning and I have been deeply humbled, last night I realised at about 10 pm that most of my team for work this morning was 'farm lads'. They are not always the most reliable at getting up on a Saturday morning (hearts of gold though!!) depending in part on what they've done on the Friday evening. I had visions of half of them in London 'till the early hours of the morning and not being able to get up........

Well, this morning I wandered around - and lo and behold they`d all got up before me and were ready - amazing.............

Hmm... shouldn't be so cynical I suppose...

Got my latest Atlantis turns in - someones issued a correction to my new players guide - which is fair enough - nothing too surprising except I discovered a clan of `wild men` in the south, who mysteriously managed to kill a different scout in the north.... very odd. I suspect I`ve created too many little teams doing nothing as well, we`ll see.... but I`m off to a flying start and should start producing income from tax this go (I know I`ve joined the bourgois middle classes - traitor !!) and producing from the land (there we go a bit of working class too - I`m not all bad !!

I wish this blogger had a built in spellchecker - I ought to suggest it to them.... apparently its now owned by google - the worlds *best* search engine... some rumours going round that they`ve got dodgy privacy policies though... hmmm.. so long as I don`t get spammed (and generally I don`t.... touch wotsit) I don`t mind...

Well I posted some adverts for Voidspace and Fuchsia on the usenet groups alt.cyberspace and alt.cyberpunk yesterday. I can`t get access to newsgroups from work ( a little proxy server called Squid of all things....) and so I used the google groups to post them. A bit fiddly but great to have access. Only got 30 hits as a result though -boo - I think this site is great and Fuchsia is FANTASTIC..... Oh well try again - I`d love to post toi alt.binaries.e-books but googledon`t 'do' the binary groups........ have to find another web portal.....

A couple of interesting bits of news, someone finally got their 'comeuppance' for the nigerian 419 scam -

A notorious e-mail scam has resulted in the murder of a Nigerian diplomat in the Czech Republic.

Fifty-year-old Michael Lekara Wayid, Nigeria's consul in the Czech Republic, was shot dead by an unidentified 72-year-old Czech at the Nigerian Embassy in Prague on Wednesday.

Sounds like it might not have been his fault though... hmmm.. read the wired article anyway...

Discovered an interesting spin on filesharing as well......... sounds like its more a distributed network rather than peer to peer - its called Mnet and its hosted at good old sourceforge.....

Done a heart transplant on my PDA last night - well disconnected and reconnected the battery anyway. Hurrah - it lives !!! What I forgot is that everything is now wiped - no problem I`ll just plug it back into my computer via microsoft Activesync and it`ll restore everything from a backup........ plug it in..... do I wish to establish a connection ? .....yes please..... device name ?...... Fuzzyman.... can`t use that name - another device called Fuzzyman exists................ aaaaaaaaarghhhhhh !! Yep - it refuses to restore the backup because it hinks this a different machine... :-(

Oh well - I`ll have to play, most of the data/programs were on the flash card which is fine (36 for 128mb from crucial.com... or.co.uk? I forget which).....

On the subject of heart transplants how about this - a wired article about keeping the corpse fresh until they can remove the organs......

Unbelievable and, to me, somehow barbaric. Sustaining a dead body until its organs can be harvested is a tricky process requiring the latest in medical technology...........

Odd.....I`m working tommorrow - which is great `coz I get to come in and check my email for the next atlantis turn........

Check out the `otherfunkystuff` section..... I`ve put in the moreover obituaries newsfeed - I was looking for something random...

I find obituaries really inspiring - sometimes challengin, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny or irrelevant - ho hum.... this one is good...

Lord Wilberforce was a great-great-grandson of William Wilberforce (1759-1833), an English statesman associated with William Pitt the Younger, the great British prime minister. William Wilberforce was a religiously inspired antislavery politician who helped pave the way for the Abolition of Slavery Act of 1833.

There we go maybe religion isn`t so bad after all...

Wish I could get moreover to work on this page - still looking for something decent, maybe its time to put that joke back on............

Haha - sorted it - wired nes on the bottom of this page - wikkid......

Hee hee... I`ve got the blogging bug... tra-la-la-la-la (I think thats the right number of la`s)....

Anyway - heres another interesting article......
Soundless music and Emotions

Scientists have begun analysing the responses of 250 people who took part in the study into the effects of infrasound, carried out at Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral last September.

They showed the audience's emotions intensified as the inaudible sound vibrations, too low for the human ear to perceive, were blasted out during a 50-minute piano recital.

Soundless music experiment

Those feeling uncomfortable when the concert began, found their mood turning to anger.

Others, who had felt happy, started to notice sensations of joy.

Some physical affects were also experienced, including tingling in the back of the neck and a strange feeling in the stomach.

I was really inspired to blog yesterday - having read a couple of blogs where people obviously put real thought and effort (and time....) into what they had done. Amusing, incisive and interesting...... whilst obviously what I do is that *anyway*... I thought maybe I could add a few references to articles of interest..... and then I couldn`t get through to blogger.com .......... all day.... aargh.....

I had to waste time setting up an Atlantis Echelon bulletin board....
Atlantis Bulletin Board

As with all brilliant ideas on the net - so far only three people have signed up and used it.... hopefully with a bit of persistence it`ll take off.

Some *more* disturbing news from the good old US of A on the old privacy (Big Brother) front - which has all kicked off since 9/11 -

The ACLU wants the Supreme Court to review a decision that allows U.S. law enforcement officials to bypass strict regulations governing the use of domestic wiretaps in favor of looser criteria that pertain to foreign intelligence gathering.

Subjects of foreign intelligence wiretaps do not have to be told that they are being wire-tapped, even if the evidence is used against them in court. Moreover, the government does not need to establish "probable cause" that a crime has been or will be committed. The surveillance can last anywhere from 90 days to a year before reauthorization. ....

Wired News Article

Good old wired news eh - subscribe man - you know you want to........
Another useful one is CNET news - wired has a more Hacking/underground kind of stance, whilst CNET is more Industry orientated.....

*ahem* - like this article...
Blogging by wireless
Weblogs are so 2002. An Irish startup is trying to take the blog craze wireless.....

Read Wireless Blog Story

Finally got the numbers transferred over to my new phone - *why* do these companies lock phones so you can`t put your old SIM into it to copy the numbers across - I can see the economic reasons, screw your customer so he can`t use the phone he`s just paid for with anyone elses network - but its sure a pain in the doodah. After the Fonesync SIM card reader my Dad lent me completely failed to even *acknowledge* I had a SIM card I got a friend to copy all his numbers from his phone memory to his SIM card, then my old numbers from my old SIM to his phone memory and then from there to my new SIM - phew what an effort.... saved me typing 100 names and numbers again though......

Oh and although I`ve given up smoking :-) it looks like my PDA has died :-( no life from the screen anyway and working at a builders merchants with a big tool section - obviously we haven`t got a small enough screwdriver in the *entire building* to open up the back and have a look.....

Oh well - maybe I`ll just have to check out Megatokyo for some diversion from my sorrow.........

Hello again.

Well - we`ve had XP put on our machines, and my profile got deleted, or ruined or something.... I can`t look at my mail until monday morning and I want to know my Atlantis turns aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh !! Oh well - patience is a virtue so they say. Got a few more items done for my website though. Ultraedit is *great* for formatting text - only program I`ve found that can re-wrap text. Not perfect but saves an awful lot of work.

Having a `creative burst` at the moment - its great doing a lot of writing. Must make some *use* of it though - just writing episodes of `Glod` to earn silver in Atlantis, hardly very productive (but fun... might put them up here some time !!).

Now that stuff is disappearing off the end of this blog I`ll have to look at the Archive options. Did have soemthing really burning to say, but for the life of me can`t remember what it was - I *might* have given up smoking...... don`t think that was it though...

Well that change works - but now the moreover newsfeed at the bottom of the page has stopped working !! I`m less and less impressed with that newsfeed.... the articles on `technology features` seem less than inspiring... what I want is a newsfeed from Wired News but they charge - have to see if I can find one from these news-harvesters !!

UK census feels the force

Well my goodness gracious. Its so easy to log into this blogger thingy and knock out another post that I`m afraid you`ll be subject to much waffle !!

Could probably do with a spell checkere though, which applies to just about everything I do... hmmm...

Well thank God for Ultraedit - will change cr/lf in badly linewrapped texts into word wrapped text - this means all the annoying texts that have carriage returns all over them in the wrong places it will sort out for - it even knows which ones to do (it doesn`t remove the ones in paragraph breaks that I want to keep !!) - amazing - it will then add < BR > for me all over the place - hoorah - saving me mucho efforto - which all means adding CONTENT ought to be easy lol.....

The SIM card reader my Dad lent me doesn`t work - which is a pain - I`ve got a hundred numbers to convert to my new phone by Monday when the old SIM is switched off...... Oh yeah - anyone got an infa red phone they want to sell me for a tenner ????

Atlantis politics swimming along - I just got a huge map, but don`t know if I`m allowed to share it with my other alliance yet. Thought you`d probably had enough of Atlantis though - is thing becoming a diary or what ? Should I be sharing my innermost secrets or just waffling inanely..... who knows, and if no-one cares then......

Hmmm... added a few articles here - of course uncovering several more problems in the process. Its hardly worth the fuss adding new content - it only causes problems and makes the place look untidy. Justin is ill today - hope it doesn`t delay Fuchsiashockz - its looking good....

Hmm... doubt I`ll get round to explore it though !!

posted by Mike Foord on Thursday, February 13, 2003

Aaargh.... complicated, complicated. The usual period of uncertainty after posting turns intoi Atlantis. The politics is becoming interesting - all 5 prospectives have joined the alliance (hmmm... how much to reveal on a public blog ? hee hee) - just got to wait and see now. Wait for the next turn, wait to see if people can get on with each other and so.

I actually did a new page last night for my website - it took me all of five minutes - maybe I should do some more.....

Luke and Monique, my friends from Holland have moved over here properly. First thing Monique does upon moving in - gets Luke to repaint the living room `coz she can`t stand the colour !! Unlucky Luke... he starts at TBS Towcester on monday - hoping to grab him for `the team` before too long.

Actually motivated today to work - how odd. Got some stuff done and have Aaron the glamorous assistant with me and he`s working like a trooper - which convicts me and so I have to do some work.

Have done a bit on the website, made things a bit nicer to look at and put a couple of intros in - check out the funky logo on this page, oh you have... cool isn`t it.

Two of the boys came through on the Atlantis alliance - just waiting for the 'biggie'. Should have a 'mail me' and back to top thingy at the bottom of this page, was going to say loads of other things but they`ve all fleed my mind - probably a good thing from your point of view !!

Aaaaaargh..... came in this morning and discovered I`d ordered the wrong tiles for a customer - disaster. *Lots* to do, quotes etc... all good business but it distracts me from my true vocation of playing on the web !!

Didn`t get a reply on my alliance suggestion from Atlantis - hmmm.. hope they`re all thinking about it. Worked out my turns - just need to write an article for the times - might do a new players guide. If I do will post it here.

Got my new motherboard - whoopee, and a new PSU so got *another* computer to build. We have been offered a broadband connection that I can stick a box on and use as a server. Now - hopefully I can get *another* box and we`ll use that - otherwise I`ll have to use this one and my precious hard drive space !!

Oh yeah and finished the first draft of Human OS 1.1 - my comparison between the human mind and a computer operating system - its a bit rough but great fun !! Don`t know whether to post it now or wait till I`ve re-drafted it. If I post it the temptation is to leave it, but if I wait it might be ages.......

Oh yeah - my email address isn`t on here yet so michael@voidspace.org.uk - oh yeah - hoorah - my domain is registered.....

Thats all for now....

Great fun....... Very like a game I played by mail in my misspent youth - except that got very expensive (this is free) and in that one all my eagles betrayed me and I died :( - hopefully this will work out better and not take up toooo much time.

Now all I need to do is the content of my website.... oh yeah and work.....

Our new Atlantis turns have come in and its ever so exciting !! Ooooooooooooooh - everything has changed but I`ll have to tell you about that next tiem I fiddle with this....
