Going Freelance
A while back I blogged that all I had to do in order to become a full time webmaster was to increase the amount of visitors to my website one hundred times. Yup, a ten thousand percent increase and I can retire.
That's not going to happen of course. Not ever. With a concerted effort I could possibly double or even triple my 'traffic', by re-organising and writing new articles. Most of my time at the moment is spent programming though. This leads me to an interesting point...
I've recently launched Movable Python, my first attempt at a commercial program. I won't even attempt to explain what it does; your eyes would glaze over within seconds. Sales though are ok, I'm only charging £5 and I'm selling a pretty steady one a day. When I release the demo version I reckon I can count on doubling that.
Now if I could sell ten a day, I'd be earning more than I do currently. Multiplying something by ten sounds a lot easier than multiplying it by one hundred. In fact it sounds about ten times easier.
I really enjoy programming. What I'd really like to do is write and run a successful web application. You know, something like Reddit or Del.icio.us. Something a tenth as successful as these would be fine, but writing and maintaining my programs [1] would be just as fine. Suddenly it doesn't seem such an impossible dream. I've already got two programs I give away that I could sell versions of. I've also got three relatively simple programs in mind that I could sell. Get all these selling two each a day; well I'm sure you can do the maths.
For those of you with a techie streak, don't worry. I haven't given up on Open Source. In fact some of these programs I may be able to give away the source code for. Cool hey. Hmmm... we'll see.

The Old Blog Archives
There was so much ancient wisdom distilled into my old blog, that I couldn't let it just creep ignominiously into the pages of cyber-history. More to the point I'm still getting some hits from google with the old entries. Here are the archives of my previous Blogger based blog.
